From the Club President, Ben Godwin:
Fellow Members,
What a busy month we had in January! The Ladies Leagues started their Winter/Spring Seasons. The Men’s USTA 4.0 Senior and Super Senior Leagues began their seasons, as did A Few Good Men. In addition, there was lots of recreational play as we enjoyed some beautiful winter weather. I hope that you were able to take advantage of the good weather to get some time on the courts.
The Bistro also hosted the season ending dinner for A Few Good Men; the Annual Meeting and dinner where Ron Woods gave an excellent talk on how to develop more energy; Mixed Doubles with Kathy and Ron; and the buffet that followed our first Golf Tournament. Over 140 of your fellow members and friends attended these events. Please join us when you can. The tennis, fellowship, and food are outstanding!
Please take a minute to thank Earl Gehant for building the bench on the roof deck on the north side of the Club. Earl is a great carpenter. He also built the raised deck in front of the Pro Shop and will build a new bench on the south roof deck. Last month we spoke about George McWicker and Buzz Proper. Their painting of the raised deck improved its appearance and will extend its life. Diane Bowman is also to be congratulated for organizing and running the Golf Tournament. This event was perfect. Working with Patrick, Diane coordinated all aspects of the event and made it fun for everyone. As a member owned club, we appreciate your sharing of your time and talents to help us all have a better facility and more fun. Thanks very much.
See you on the courts!

What Can You Learn From The Australian Open?
Never give up! This Grand Slam record setting, six hour, five set men’s final thriller between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal showed brilliant shot making, the ups and downs of momentum, gritty determination and physical fitness to the max.
How does any of the magic displayed in that match apply to you?
- • Play every point as if it’s the first point of the match. (Stay present centered)
- • Use aim points that are safe. (use high percentage placement)
- • Keep going when you miss a shot. (they aren’t perfect either)
- • Conditioning does matter. (go to Gold’s Gym or use other forms of strength training like resistance bands)
- • Momentum often shifts if you can stick around long enough. (keep your focus)
- • Move your feet when balls are easy. (unforced errors often occur when balls are hit right at you)
- • Defense matters. (Rafa’s magic to stay in the match)
- • Enjoy the battle. (Novak’s magic)
- • You can be proud of your performance and effort even if you lose. (Rafa’s words)
At every level of play, you should put forth maximum effort for the whole match. There is no time limit in tennis so never, ever give up.
